BLOOMINGTON, Ill., October 19, 2026. Kernovate Inc., the Bloomington based 501(c)(3) that recycles mattresses and delivers free beds to families in crisis, announced today that both of its programs now serve 19 counties across Central Illinois. Kernovate launched in November 2025 as McLean County's first dedicated mattress recycling nonprofit. Less than a year later, its pickup, drop off, and bed delivery services reach from Peoria to Champaign and from LaSalle to Sangamon County. The announcement comes alongside a $5,000 grant from Ameren Illinois supporting Kernovate's BEDS Program, and a new relationship with Carter's Furniture of Champaign, the first furniture retailer in the region to give customers a documented recycling outcome for the mattress and box spring they're replacing. Kernovate runs two programs out of the same warehouse. SPRINGS recycles mattresses, box springs, frames, and adjustable bases from households, hotels, universities, and retailers, recovering steel, foam, and textile for resale. To date, SPRINGS has diverted 5,106 units, or 243,855 pounds (121.9 tons), from area landfills. BEDS, the Beds Emergency Delivery Service, takes the units that arrive in reusable condition, sanitizes them, and delivers them free to households referred by social service agencies, schools, and shelters. The two programs feed each other. Since launching in November 2025, BEDS has built a referral network of more than 20 partner agencies in McLean County and placed 132 beds with 68 households, with 44 children in the households served. The beds come at no cost to the program because they are recovered through commercial recycling contracts rather than purchased. The expanded service area now covers McLean, Champaign, Sangamon, Peoria, Tazewell, Macon, Woodford, Livingston, Logan, Piatt, DeWitt, Ford, Mason, Marshall, Menard, Putnam, Stark, LaSalle, and Fulton counties. "Every county we add is a county where hotels and retailers are paying to landfill mattresses that are still good, while families a few miles away are sleeping on the floor," said Daniel Kern, Kernovate's Founder and Executive Director. "We sit in the middle of that. The further we reach, the more of those two problems we can solve with the same truck." Ameren Illinois backs BEDS Ameren Illinois has awarded Kernovate a $5,000 grant in support of the BEDS Program. The funds go directly to program delivery: sanitation supplies, bed frames, and the cost of getting beds into homes across the service area. "Ameren was one of the first funders to look at what we were doing and say yes," Kern said. "A bed is a basic health need. Kids who sleep on the floor miss school and get sick more often. This grant means more of those kids sleep in a bed." Carter's Furniture: the first retailer to close the loop Carter's Furniture of Champaign is the first furniture retailer in Central Illinois to route customers' old mattresses and box springs to Kernovate for recycling. When a Carter's customer replaces a bed, the old one goes to Kernovate's facility, where it is either deconstructed for steel, foam, and textile recovery or, if it is in reusable condition, sanitized and placed with a family through BEDS. Most mattress retailers offer haul away when a new bed is delivered. Few can say where the old one ends up. Mattresses are bulky, hard to compact, and expensive to landfill, and "responsibly recycled" is a claim that rarely comes with a receipt. "Carter's can now tell a customer exactly what happened to the mattress they got rid of," Kern said. "It was recycled in Bloomington, or it went to a family that needed it. Any retailer in our 19 counties can offer their customers the same answer. We'd like them to." Kernovate provides commercial recycling partners with documented, per unit diversion records suitable for sustainability reporting.
